TULSA---Tulsans may have thought they were in a time-warp this morning as a convoy of classic Greyhound Scenic Cruiser busses wound their way down Route 66 this morning. The restored busses, built in the 1950's were on their way to Adrian, Texas for the first ever Scenic Cruiser meeting.
Only 1001 of the nearly double-decker busses were built by GMC for Greyhound and only slightly over 200 are still on the road. Parts are hard to find, and keeping the 8-cylinder diesel busses running is no mean feat. But they are a true head-turner as the smoke their way down the road.
‘It's a nostalgic thing for most people,' said Tom McNally, ‘they instantly remember, you know, and they're kind of blown away when they see one on the road again—it's kind of an instant flashback.'
The busses were said to get around 6 miles per gallon, but these drives said they were excited to be getting over 6.5 mpg!
