TULSA, Oklahoma -- It's been debated for years, and now neighbors say they're making it happen. The plan centers around the dilapidated Northland Shopping Center on 36th Street North.
It was abandoned long ago. The signs are fading, the store windows empty. But signs of life exist next door with the construction of a new medical clinic.
The neighborhood hopes to build on that progress by creating a comprehensive plan to attract developers with money to improve North Tulsa.
The Northland Shopping Center would be a mixed-used development with housing and upscale chain clothing stores.
Neighborhood association leaders teamed up with college students studying urban planning to create the plan.
They realize it will take years to see permanent growth in north Tulsa, but hope new development takes root in three to five years.
People living across from Northland say it's about time.
"What begins here, grows here, so I think whatever we do, we have to incorporate the people who already live here," said north Tulsa resident Philip Hargett.
Real progress is a marathon, not a sprint, and the small group of passionate people leading the way can't do it alone.
The first step of their journey is to gather support from neighbors.
