SKIATOOK LAKE, Oklahoma -- Tall Chief Cove swimming beach at Skiatook Lake will be closing on June 15, 2011.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers made the announcement Wednesday, saying the reason is low lake levels brought on by the continuing drought.

The Corps says Skiatook Lake is nearly 6 feet below its normal pool elevation and continuing to fall.

"Relocating the delineated swimming area to deeper water is not a safe option due to underwater obstructions in the area, the Tall Chief Creek channel, and the nearby boating lane," said Greg Bersche, park ranger, Skiatook Lake.

Lake levels and conditions will be monitored by the Corps, and they say swim beach will reopen when it is considered safe.
