One week after being hired, new Tulsa head coach Danny Manning was officially introduced Wednesday by athletic director Ross Parmley.
"I'm excited about becoming the head basketball coach at The University of Tulsa. I want to thank President Upham, Ross [Parmley] and the search committee for allowing me this tremendous opportunity to coach at a University with a fine basketball tradition," Manning said. "I'd also like to thank Kansas Coach [Bill] Self for giving me the chance to be a part of his staff for the past nine years. I have learned a tremendous amount about the game and the profession from him and all of the members of his staff."
Manning is widely regarded as one of the best players in Kansas history, leading the Jayhawks to a 1986 Final Four and a national championship in 1988. When done at KU, he finished his career with a Big 8-record 2,951 points, including 31 points and 18 rebounds in the 1988 National Championship game.
He was selected first in the 1988 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Clippers, scoring more than 12,000 points in his career, averaging 14 points per game. After his time in the NBA, manning joined the Kansas coaching staff, becoming an assistant coach in 2007 and serving as the Director of Student-Athlete Development.
"He epitomizes everything our university stands for. His impact on young people will extend far beyond the TU basketball program and reach well into our campus and community," Parmley. "His 15 years in the NBA combined with the last nine years under one of the best coaches in the country, have helped mold him into a great teacher and coach of basketball. He most definitely brings the excitement, the style of basketball, and character that we were looking for in our head coach."
Manning comes in to replace former head coach Doug Wojcik, who led Tulsa to a 140-92 record in seven seasons, but failed to make a postseason tournament for his final two seasons.
