Police in Shawnee are investigating a possible attempted child abduction after an unknown person called the school asking for a kindergartner to have his bus drop-off location switched.
The boy's mom, Amber Crook, is very upset about the incident. She says she has not slept since she got the phone call from her 6-year-old's school saying her child went missing. Thankfully, she was able to pick her son up after the bus route was changed.
Now police and the school are trying to figure out who called the school and requested the little boy's drop-off location to change.
"As a mom that's something you never want to go through," said Crook.
Ever since Crook says her son's school called her husband to say their 6-year-old wasn't where he was supposed to be Wednesday afternoon, she has been worried sick for his safety.
"The one thing I was blessed with in this world was taken from me, that someone was trying to harm him," she said. "I could've lost my son."
Now, 6-year-old Hunter is fine.
"He's here with me today because of safety reasons and we are following up with detectives."
Police say a very suspicious call came into the school saying Hunter needed to be dropped off at a different location. While police start this possible abduction investigation, they've warned all schools in the area of the incident.
"They loaded him on the bus to his school to another public school and from that public school to the Salvation Army after school program."
Crook says the school let it happen. Hunter's grandmother doesn't understand how it could have happened either. She says even she has to show ID when she picks up her grandson.
So, now the family is wondering why a stranger was allowed to call the school with just the child's first and last name and the teacher's name and get the bus route changed.
"No questions asked who they were. I was not notified, protocol was not done," Crook said. "My child's safety was in danger."
News 9 attempted to reach the superintendent and the school's principal, but our calls were not returned. However, while we were with Crook in the park the school called and said they have a list of phone numbers from the caller ID for Crook to look at to see if she recognizes any of them.
Shawnee Police are asking for information. If you know anything or see anything suspicious, call them at (405) 273-2121.
