A Tulsa TV favorite has died. Don Woods did the weather at KTUL-Channel 8 for decades and retired as the chief meteorologist.
Never far from his side was "Gusty," his cartoon friend who helped illustrate Green Country's wacky weather.
Many Woods fans have souvenir "Gusty" drawings they treasure to this day.
After retiring from KTUL, Woods told News On 6, "I didn't wanna just sit on the couch and wait for Willard Scott to call and wish me a happy birthday," so he began teaching meteorology at then-Tulsa Junior College.
Woods was also an accomplished watercolor artist.
Our Travis Meyer worked with Don Woods for almost 10 years. Travis shared this on his Facebook page Tuesday night:
"Don Woods...TV Icon has passed away tonight. He had been in failing health this past year. Very sad night for those of us who were touched by him. A GREAT Christian man and one who I wanted to be like because of his gentle ways with all. Don, you are again with your wife Jane in heaven and I know we lost you but God gained a truly awesome Christian spirit."
Woods was 84 years old. He succumbed to cancer Tuesday evening about 7 p.m.
