The moment I started seeing commercials for the 2012 Oklahoma State Fair, I was beyond excited. Last year was my first year at the fair and I loved it so much, I couldn't wait to go back this year. Where else can you have a variety of different cuisine packed into one place? It's something I found myself looking forward to all summer. Last year, I tried my first ever red velvet funnel cake, bacon-wrapped beer-battered chicken, and many other fried foods I didn't know existed! I was ready for round 2!
This past Friday, I went with a group of friends from my church and had such a great time. We were there for the better part of four hours and still didn't have time to see and do everything. More food vendors than you can likely handle and rides as far as the eye can see. I've never been a huge fan of carnival/fair rides (mainly because I need a pure adrenaline rush with high speed roller coasters), but I had to make time for the Ferris wheel. That's a ride everyone can enjoy, unless you have an unnerving fear of heights. I have a slight fear of heights and still enjoyed seeing the fair a top the wheel. Just don't look straight down. ;)
And who can forget the food?! The staple of any state fair! Fried concoctions that aren't found anywhere else. I mentioned I had the out-of-this-world red velvet funnel cake last year and actually looked for it again this year. Much to my dismay, it wasn't offered this year, so I settled for an ordinary funnel cake, which is still top notch. Other delicious foods I tried? The traditional bacon-wrapped beer-battered chicken, the "donut burger" (a burger with two glazed donuts as the buns), and new to me this year, fried Kool-Aid. I don't know how they do it, but it's incredible. It tasted like a Kool-Aid cake type of dessert. I highly recommend it.
There's so much more to see and do at the state fair than I talked about here! If you've never been to the state fair or maybe just haven't made it out there yet this year, you definitely need to do so! Temps will be a bit warmer this week with a few chances for rain and storms on Monday and again Thursday/Friday, but we won't have to contend with triple-digit heat and that's always a good thing.
