Oklahoman Tracy Letts Wins 'Best Actor' Tony Award

Tony Letts earned worldwide fame when his "August: Osage County" won the Pulitzer and five Tonys, including the best play trophy in 2008.

Tracy Letts, who won a Tony Award as a playwright, now has one as an actor.

Letts took home the trophy for best performance by an actor in a play for playing George, one-half of the bickering couple at the heart of Edward Albee's "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

He beat out Nathan Lane, Tom Hanks, David Hyde Pierce and Tom Sturridge.

Letts, a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company ensemble since 2002, earned worldwide fame when his "August: Osage County" won the Pulitzer and five Tonys, including the best play trophy in 2008.

His other plays include "Man from Nebraska," a Pulitzer finalist in 2004, "Killer Joe," ''Superior Donuts" and "Bug." His previous acting credits include "Betrayal," ''The Pillowman," ''Homebody/Kabul" and "Glengarry Glen Ross."

Letts graduated from Durant High School. 

In 2012, movie crews were in Bartlesville, Pawhuska and several other Osage County communities for the filming of the movie version of August: Osage County.

And two Tulsans, Jay Krottinger and Ryan Tanner, producers with Tulsa company Square One Theatrics also celebrated with several Tonys Sunday.

Patina Miller won best performance by an actress in a leading role in a musical, best revival of a musical, best performance by an actress in a featured role in a musical, Andrea Martin and best direction of a musical, Diane Paulus, all for Pippin.
