The new Financial Crimes Unit in Tulsa is already hard at work. Wednesday, they hand delivered letters to businesses, outlining ways to protect themselves from mail theft.

This comes after a rise in thefts from unsecured business mailboxes. Police say thieves often forge checks stolen from mailboxes.

A simple solution for businesses is to buy a more secure mailbox.

"Majority of times, people will not--I mean if they don't have time to break it, they're not going to break it to see if there is anything in there. So, we advise a lock box or go to the post office to mail your bills out," said Detective Kayla Wiggs.

You can protect yourself from mail fraud at home by picking up the mail immediately or asking a friend to do it for you.
