Investigators: Controlled Burn Unlikely Cause Of Logan Co. Wildfire

Investigators now say it doesn't appear that the massive Logan County wildfire started as a controlled burn.

Fire officials held a news conference Tuesday morning, and said the wildfire has destroyed 42 structures, including at least ten occupied homes.

Officials said there are still small flare-ups. However, firefighters have contained 90 percent of the fire and they hope to contain it 100 percent by the end of the day on Tuesday.

There are no on-going evacuations or road closures. Authorities are patrolling the affected areas and are asking people to stay away unless they live there.

The massive grass fire started around 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the area east of Interstate 35 near Forest Hill Dr. and Air Depot. Initially, investigators believed that the fire started out as part of a controlled burn.

Investigators said when they originally spoke with several witnesses, they were convinced that the wildfire started as a controlled burn at a man's property. However, they said a controlled burn may have started at that property some time on Sunday, but the wildfire started long before that controlled burn, and may have swept through that area as well.

An investigation into the cause of the wildfire is ongoing.
