Police: Excessive Speed Causes Fatal Tulsa Crash

Police say the driver of a Camaro was going 52 mph over the speed limit shortly before being involved in a fatality crash last month in south Tulsa.

Police say the driver of a Camaro was going 52 mph over the speed limit shortly before being involved in a fatality crash last month in south Tulsa. That's more than double the speed limit.

The crash killed Emma Jean Bennett, 82, on September 26, 2014. The deadly collision took place on 71st Street at Evanston.

Tulsa police tell us James Randel Blissit was driving the Camaro. He was taken to the hospital.

Police questioned the driver of another car - thought to have been involved in the incident with Blissit before the crash - that driver was let go.

People standing around watching the aftermath told us they were shocked something like this happened right outside their neighborhood

Police say Bennett was stopped to turn onto Evanston when Blissit crested a hill westbound on 71st Street. The black box equipped on the sports car indicates the Camaro was going 52 miles an hour over the speed limit - or 97 mph - three second before impact. The accelerator was pressed at 99 percent, and there was no braking, the accident report reads.

At impact, the Camaro was going 66 mph. The two cars flew off the roadway, landing in nearby trees. There's still debris littering the ground where the crash ended.

Police also say based on the time and distance, Bennett could not have seen the Camaro crest the hill before starting her turn.

As of right now, no charges have been filed in the wreck.

Bennett was survived by her husband, three children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren, according to her obituary.
