Deputy Hurt After Joining Tulsa Police Chase

An Osage County deputy was hurt when his squad car crashed during a chase which began in Tulsa overnight.

Tulsa Police said the chase began in the 2100 block of South Yale just before 2 a.m. Police said the Ford Ranger pickup was parked in front of a house where officers were preparing to serve a search warrant when it drove off.

The chase wound its way around Tulsa and into Osage County before it ended in the 2900 block of North Hartford about an hour later.

Police said their helicopter were able to visually follow the pickup truck as Stevens eluded officers on the ground by turning off his headlights. Eventually, officers said stop sticks caused the pickup truck's front left tire to deflate. The chase ended a short time later after the front left wheel and tire broke off.

During the chase, an Osage County reserve deputy crashed his patrol car.

According to Osage County Undersheriff Lou Ann Brown, the deputy lost control and rolled his car at a curve about a mile south of Highway 20 at North 52nd Street West and 133rd North. She says the impact ejected the deputy and the car landed on his lower legs.

The Skiatook Fire Department rescued the deputy and took him to the hospital.

Police identify the driver as Shawn Stevens, 46. They booked him into the Tulsa County jail on complaints of eluding and having an improper license tag as well as an outstanding warrant. Jail records show he has a court appearance set for March 16.
