Search For Escapee Armed With Shotgun Centers On Spavinaw

Authorities are searching for an escaped convict known to frequent the Spavinaw area. The Mayes County Sheriff's Office says it believes Steven Newby is armed with a shotgun and hiding in heavy woods.

A spokesperson with Mayes County says Newby escaped from Avalon halfway house in Tulsa earlier in March. He has a history of convictions for burglary, arson, larceny, and running a roadblock, among other crimes.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol is assisting Mayes County in the search. Newby is known to frequent the Spavinaw area and is well acquainted with the countryside, authorities say.

Newby is described as a 6'2", 231 pound man with brown hair and eyes. He has numerous tattoos including a skull on his neck.

He was last seen wearing a dark hoodie and blue jeans on Ross Street in Spavinaw.
