Tulsa's Municipal Judges Hold Court At City Parks

Tulsa municipal court was in session at an unlikely location Tuesday, a city park.

The City of Tulsa is holding a municipal warrant amnesty period for those with unpaid tickets. The location for Tuesday's court session was Lacy Park's community center at 2134 North Madison Place.

There was a line out the door as residents waited for their time before a judge. Much like a real courtroom, our cameras were not allowed to go inside - though we were able to get some video from afar. There are so many people here, extra chairs were needed in the makeshift courtroom.

Tuesday was an opportunity for folks with municipal misdemeanor warrants to make good on their unpaid tickets without having to pay late fees. Those who appear will not be arrested for their outstanding warrants and their immigration status will not be checked.

Tulsa says it has 90,000 outstanding municipal warrants. A judge is giving those with high ticket costs six months to pay off their fines.

The city says this is not about money.

"No. It's about getting these things taken care of getting them off their licenses, or off of the records I should say," said Kelly Brader with the City of Tulsa.

Court was in session at Lacy Park until 2 p.m. There are three more court dates set for different parks around Tulsa.

May 12 - Hicks Park, 3443 South Mingo
May 14 - Whiteside Park, 4009 South Pittsburg

The city expects to settle about 2,000 tickets Once the amnesty period ends, an aggressive warrant sweep will begin.
