Tulsa Man Pleads Guilty To Stealing $283K In Food Stamp Benefits

The owner of a Tulsa convenience store pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing more than $282,000 from the federal food stamp program, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tulsa.

In a news release, U.S. Attorney Danny Williams said Miton Islam, 46, of Broken Arrow pleaded guilty and admitted he stole $282,912 from the Department of Agriculture's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, between 2011 and 2014.

Williams said Islam used a scheme in which customers got cash for their SNAP benefits at the Apache Food Mart at 27th and North Yale rather than food assistance. He said cash the customers received was only half of the amount Islam received from SNAP.

Milton Islam is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court August 11. He faces up to 10 years in prison and could be fined up to twice the loss amount which would be $565,824.

Tulsa County court records show Islam still faces a charge of maintaining a place for keeping/selling of controlled drugs. In March, Islam waived his preliminary hearing and has a court appearance set for May 28 on that charge.
