According to TPD Cpl. Greg Smith, Mathews drove northbound in southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 169 for a portion of the pursuit.

The TPD helicopter assisted in the chase.

A 19-year-old woman was in the vehicle with Mathews, Smith said.

Smith said the pursuit began when the TPD officer who took the initial stolen vehicle report saw the vehicle and started following it.

Mathews pleaded guilty in 2013 to holding a woman and child hostage inside a home, then engaging police in a standoff.
