A new multi-million dollar school is coming together on the northeast side of Owasso.
Rejoice Christian School at 106th Street North and Highway 169 broke ground on its new campus in March..
I took a tour of the new elementary school which is still under construction. The school says the new school won't be ready for the start of school on August 20, but it will be close.
Construction workers are scattered around the building, laying floors, installing windows; all the final projects before school officially opens.
"This elementary school is for Pre-3 through fifth grade. It's 86,000 square feet and has large classrooms, science labs and a gym. The gym might be the best part of the school, because it doubles as a storm shelter.
The school says it meets FEMA standards. It's built to withstand 250 mile winds and an EF-5 tornado.
"It's multi-functional, that's where you get into your costs savings and the benefits of your, you're already building so you might as well reinforce them at the time of construction. You're gonna save a lot more money doing that than retrofitting it later," said Craig Thilsted, Cyntergy.
Rejoice's superintendent hopes to start holding classes in the school in September.
Rejoice Christian Schools also building a mid-high and high school on the same campus, although those won't be finished until the 2016 school year.
The entire project will top $50-million, much of it has been donated.
