Tulsa police shot and killed a man who they say charged at officers with an ax Monday night.
It’s the second deadly police shooting in as many days in Tulsa. Neighbors said the whole scenario is heartbreaking.
Gunfire and emergency crews changed the mood of the normally quiet street. When emergency crews made their way down West 44th Street, responding to a fatal shooting, neighbors couldn't do much.
Sandy Casey said, "The neighbors just stood here and held our breath, tried not to cry."
Just after 6:15 Monday night, Tulsa police responded to a domestic dispute. The suspect's wife called police saying she feared for her life.
She waited in her car until police arrived.
When officers confronted the man, they said he charged them with an ax. Both officers ended up firing their guns.
Sergeant Shane Tuell said, "He was making statements and comments toward officers to the effect he wanted to die, things of that nature."
Casey said she feels for the man’s family.
"Lost his dad. His dad is in the street. It just breaks my heart to think his dad is gone," she said.
But, she also realizes the toll the shooting will have on the officers who had to make the life or death decision.
Casey said, "One of the first things my husband said was, ‘Did you see the police officer? How is he?’ and the gentleman said he's shook, and it just breaks your heart."
Both officers are on paid administrative leave.
Police say they will be reviewing dash cam footage from one of the patrol cars to see if it captured what happened.
Police have not released the names of the officers or the suspect.
