Mike Gundy wrote and posted a thought-out message in the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s wild, controversial 30-27 loss to Central Michigan.
He expressed disappointment in himself for calling the play that led to an intentional grounding penalty which led to that fateful untimed down for the Chippewas. He credited CMU for coming up with a great final play and noted his disappointment in the officials who didn’t properly apply the rules. The main point of that message was to close the book on the Central Michigan game and move on to this week’s opponent, Pittsburgh.

That wasn’t about to happen and Gundy knew it.
In fact, he came out spitting fire in what has to be his most entertaining news conference since “I’m a man, I’m 40!”
“I feel like we should have our officials in (home) games, in Power-5 conference games,” Gundy said, referencing the MAC crew that was suspended for two games after the unfortunate call.
“That’s just my opinion and I can be wrong. There’s a lot of good officials out there but they’re all working to get to that level, right? Aren’t most umpires in Double-A trying to get to the majors?”
Later he jokingly went in on the conference officials who monitor the games from Big 12 headquarters, comparing them to cartoon characters.
“They’re watching every game, so, jokingly, you ever watch cartoons when they have a guy up in a fort and he’s like this (nods off at the podium as if sleepy).”
Gundy went on to preview the Panthers too, although most of his questions were about the CMU ending. Watch the full presser here and check out Mason Rudolph and Chad Whitener’s media sessions as well.
