Snapchat set up a kiosk to sell its new video recording spectacles at the Catoosa Blue Whale. People waited in long lines to buy the gadgets - either for themselves or someone else.
Gift shop operator Linda Hobbs said the social media giant tweeted out the news early Tuesday morning, and customers started lining up.
"We have quite a line that appeared in the middle of the night," Hobbs said. "It is here, and they are definitely selling."
Snapchat set up a bright yellow kiosk in front of the whale, complete with balloons. Hobbs decided to go in early to get the gift shop up and running.
"They chose this spot to help support the Blue Whale and Highway 66, and we're glad they did," she said. "It's a lot of fun."
It's an unusual sales campaign where the kiosks appear at random locations, and fans show up as soon as they can.
The glasses cost $130 and are limited to two per person. People are already asking a lot more than the retail cost on different auction websites.
Grant Bennett said a friend sent him a text telling him he had to get to Catoosa. He decided to go into work a little late so he could snag a pair.
"I decided to take a little detour and stop in at the Blue Whale," he said. The Tulsa resident had never visited the Oklahoma favorite until Tuesday.
Bennett, 23, said he likes Snapchat for seeing what his friends are up to and sharing his life.
"It's fun to see your friends, their nights out on the town," he said. "It's neat to be able to see something live that you don't have the opportunity to go see yourself."
We hear the kiosk sold out of the glasses around 10:30 a.m., but Linda Hobbs said the crowds were still in line, hoping more glasses might be on their way.
