Evacuations In Montgomery County, Kansas Due To Flooding

Heavy rains late Tuesday and early Wednesday north of the Oklahoma-Kansas state line have left two people dead. Flooding has closed roads, stranded cars and led to evacuations.

The National Weather Service reports the Verdigris River in Independence, Kansas has crested at 41.6 feet which is considered minor flooding, but they expect it to go down significantly in the next 24 hours.

The radar shows that Independence had 7 to 8 inches of rain overnight and up to 12 inches just northwest of town.

Officials in had to close off streets because the water levels were so high and it wasn't safe for cars to get through.

They had to evacuate some people from their homes. Emergency crews offered to give those people a ride so they didn't have to risk getting out in their own cars.

Six inches of rain can make it unsafe to walk through water. Twelve inches or more is unsafe for a small vehicle, and 18 to 24 inches could wash away an SUV, van or truck.

Things are getting better Wednesday morning, but a flash flood warning remains for Montgomery County. That's where the bodies of a father and son were recovered from a car. They have been identified as Dennis Clark Catron Sr., 72, and Dennis Clark Catron Jr., 39, of rural Elk City.

The two men died when their car was swept from the road on CR 2950 south of CR 5400.

A third man was missing after his car was found on its side in a ditch near Independence. That man was located alive Wednesday morning. He had lost his cell phone after escaping the vehicle, and attempts to contact him weren't successful.

Officials tell News On 6, some people who were evacuated overnight are now staying at Memorial Hall in Independence. The fire department responded to 40 to 50 water rescues in Independence, emergency management reports.
