Newly Named Unity Learning Academy Holds Opening Day Celebration

A newly renamed elementary school had an opening celebration today.

The former Andrew Jackson Elementary is now Unity Learning Academy. Just before the storms rolled in on Thursday a ceremonial ribbon was cut and new signs were unveiled.

Principal Elmer Thomas says he's glad to see people latch onto the new name.

"We wanna let people know that we're being unified, being unity we wanna make a bigger voice in the say of this city," said Thomas.

After the ceremony, students and their families had the chance to meet with teachers and staff. Students also got free school t-shirts and a backpack full of school supplies.
