An Oktaha man is dead after investigators say he was hit by at least one train today. A statement sent to News On 6 by Union Pacific Railroad says the train hit a man who was lying across the tracks.
The Muskogee County Sheriff's Office says they think the victim could have been hit by another train earlier in the morning.
“Our working theory right now is that it had potentially been hit by a train that had come through earlier, and they were not aware of it," says Chief Deputy Michael Mahan.
Mahan says the Union Pacific engineer saw the victim and reported it. Investigators say they're still trying to figure out exactly how the man got there.
"It does not appear to be a crossing. This just looks like the individual was walking out through a field and decided to cross there," Mahan says. "There's also the potential, and we haven't made this determination yet, that he may have been riding on the train."
Mahan says crossing train tracks is extremely dangerous, whether a person is walking or in a car.
"If you're gonna cross that track, you need to get over it quickly. You need to do it in an area that's made for crossing," Mahan says
Mahan says we may never fully know how this man lost his life today.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating. The man was still unidentified as of Tuesday night.
