Shawnee Murder Suspect Arrested With Public’s Help

A murder suspect was arrested early Wednesday morning in Shawnee.

Wayne Dyke, 21, is accused of shooting and killing Mark Little Monday evening.

Surveillance cameras from neighbors’ homes captured the last moments Mark Little was alive, and that video helped to quickly identify Wayne Dyke as the suspect.

Little is visibly agitated in the video as he walks with Dyke down Dewey Street. Witnesses tell News 9 that Little had removed his shirt moments before coming into the camera’s view. Police say the video became a critical piece of evidence in their investigation.

“Unfortunately, people feel like they have to have surveillance out at their houses, but in a situation like this it benefits the community and law enforcement because it’s something we can use to be able to identify somebody,” says Cpl. Vivian Lozano.

As the image of a man in a red shirt was released to the public, police officers were some of the first to recognize him.

Lozano says, “They did from working with him in the past and just having contact with him.”

Witnesses tell News 9 the argument between Dyke and Little escalated at Dewey Street and Hobson Street. The pair walked a block west to Broadway Avenue, where Little was shot and killed in the middle of the street.

Investigators are still trying to determine the motive, but some witnesses believe Dyke may have been acting in self-defense, saying Little provoked him through his own aggression.

Police hope to learn more from their suspect, who the public quickly tracked down once he was identified.

“We got several leads from the community,” Lozano says, “that they had seen him or knew him or knew where he was at, which led officers to a residence here in town and he was in there and he was apprehended.”

Dyke is now being held without bond for first degree murder.
