Candidates For Oklahoma Co. Sheriff Position Debate In OKC

It was a high noon showdown at the Downtown Oklahoma City Library between longtime incumbent Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel and his Republican challenger, Rep. Mike Christian.

"For 20 years he said he was going to fix the jail," said Christian. "What do we have? An albatross."

Christian began his attack of current Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel early, criticizing his running of the jail, and bringing up the number of inmates who had recently died at the jail.

"He's operating a tower of terror. That's what they're calling it," said Christian.

Christian also brought up an investigative state audit currently underway on the Sheriff's office and its use of funds. He also brought up his earlier request this year for Whetsel to resign.

"And if I can't get it done in four years, you throw me out of office, " said Christian.

But Whetsel chose to stay focused on his record of improving crime rates and reducing traffic fatalities in his district.

"Over the last 20 years we have reduced traffic crashes by over 90% in those 150 square miles and we've reduced crime by 90 in those 150 square miles," said Whetsel during the debate.

Whetsel also talked about his dedicated staff and how he there is now a criminal justice task force in place to look at how to improve the conditions of the jail and criminal justice programs in the county.

"I will promise the citizens of Oklahoma County I will maintain a patrol division," said Whetsel. "I will maintain your safety."

During the debate, both Whetsel and Christian answered a total of 10 questions ranging from what made them more qualified, their endorsements, should taxpayers fund a new jail, how they would handle the jail's budget and budget cuts, to how they would reduce overcrowding. They also discussed their views on civil asset forfeiture and the use of body cameras, patrol cameras and jail videos.

Each had three minutes to present their case and not interrupt the other.
