Park Constructions In OKC, Tulsa Could Lead To Race To Purchase Trees

Architects released their latest renderings of the MAPS 3 downtown park.

The first phases won't be done until 2018, but there is already a race with construction.

The new plan show a cafe, stage, and pavilion.

There’s also going to be a lake, fountains and trails that landscape architect describe as “distinctly Oklahoman.”

However, there is also a large park going up in Tulsa.

That could mean a race to purchase trees.

“There are only so many nurseries that grow these trees that we will both be wanting to buy,” said Mary Margaret Jones, the lead landscape architect for the MAPS 3 park. "There are only so many nurseries that grow these trees that we will both be wanting to buy."

The MAPS 3 park calls for more than 800 trees and the earlier they’re purchased, the bigger they'll stand, according to builders.

“Finding those trees in great numbers, in good health, to contract grow is something we and Tulsa will be doing in the coming months,” Jones said.

Jones asked City Council to green light MAPS 3 preliminary plans and specifically cited the need for tree pre-purchase plan because of Tulsa’s park.

The MAPS 3 Park is a 70 acre, $132 million project.
