Renovated Memorial Park Already Shows Wear, Tear Before It Reopens

For the past 20 months, the dusty and dug up Memorial Park has been a metro eyesore.

The project near Classen and NW 36 Street finally looks near completion, but there are already big time signs of wear and tear.

“How does that happen?” Josiah Daniel asks about the cracks in the newly resurfaced tennis courts.

Daniel is a tennis player who lives near the park and has been counting down the day until he can used the four courts.

“It looks like a very cheap job to me,” Daniel said about the quality of the work at the tennis courts.

Weeds creep through large cracks, even though the courts haven’t been used.

“It’s extremely frustrating,” he said.

Daniel took his concerns to the city which says the job is still under contractor control.

“They (the contractor) have to take care of it,” said Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation spokeswoman Jennifer McClintock. “We still haven't gone through our final inspections and punch list yet."

The park is on month 20 of a remodel that was originally expected to take 10 months.

The goal is to open by Labor Day.

The city said needed repairs could mean the tennis court could remain locked up until after Labor Day.
