There's a new app for students to download before they return to class on Monday in Stillwater.
It's called Orange Shield, an app developed to connect anyone at OSU to campus police faster.
As soon as class is dismissed, smart phones come out. On any college campus it's hard not to find a phone in hand.
It's why Oklahoma State University Police worked with developers to create Orange Shield.
“If they hit the 911 app, that call will automatically be routed to our dispatch center immediately. Not only that, we can determine the location of the caller,” said Michael Robinson, OSU Chief Public Safety Officer.
It pinpoints the user's location on campus down to the specific floor.
“It's just another way OSU PD is trying to keep our campus as safe as they can make it,” said Sarah Meinders, a sophomore at OSU.
Sarah Meinders is also a resident assistant.
She's already downloaded the app and will encourage all her freshman residents to do the same.
Orange Shield also allows users to send pictures, videos and texts to police anonymously to campus PD. The app also features several other options like Friend Watch, alerting the emergency contact when the user has not returned from an activity by the time they've set.
“Just having that extra way to contact police, being able to keep track of friends and having other useful resources through that app would be really comforting,” said OSU Senior Matt Belanger.
The university is not only encouraging students and faculty to download this app, but any cowboy fan that plans on coming to campus especially on game days.
If you'd like to download "Orange Shield" -- it's available for both Apple and Android users.
