A local dog rescue group needs help. Homeward Bound Pug rescue has been around for more than 12 years.

They've saved hundreds of dogs. But to keep doing it, they need foster parents and donations.

“My vets continue to go, ‘Why? Where are they coming from?’ But they’re just out there, needing homes,” said Homeward Bound Founder, Gail Tucker

She founded the rescue back in 2003.

“We rescued as many as we could in the first five years, but it was slow, so I thought no big deal, not too bad. And then it just got bigger and bigger and bigger,” said Tucker.

They take in pugs from several states. They could be at animal shelters, puppy mills or even owners surrendering them.

“It’s frustrating that there’s always more intake then ones that go out, so there’s always more coming in. So your funds are always low, depleted at times and yet you have vet bills,” said Tucker.

Tucker says some people think they get free services from vets, but that’s not true.

“Most of our funding will come from adoptions. And if adoptions are down, then everything, it’s just hard to make ends meet,” said Tucker.

But cash isn't all they need.

Melissa Bruner is a foster mom to two pugs right now. She encourages anyone with the space to sign up to become a foster home. The hardest thing she says is getting attached.

“It’s always hard to say goodbye. Most of the time though, that attachment that you form is relieved by the fact that you know that they’re going to a good home,” said Bruner.

And if you can't adopt or foster, donations are welcome, and every little bit helps.

“It’s not like people have to go out and spend even $20. Five dollars adds up a lot,” said Tucker.

Homeward Bound is holding an adoption event tomorrow at A-1 Pet Emporium in Edmond from noon to three.
