A federal agency is recalling hundreds of fire trucks after several trucks' wheels fell off.
We don't hesitate to call emergency crews when our safety is at risk. But the safety of fire crews here in Edmond was in jeopardy because of a faulty part on its fire trucks.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted documents on its website this weekend. Pierce Manufacturing is recalling 135 of its fire trucks because a suspension part can fail and cause a wheel to fall off.
These trucks are relatively new. They're the 2010 and 2011 models. The front suspensions were built from November 18, 2009, through May 11, 2011.
The federal investigation started in March after the administration got reports of a wheel falling off two aerial ladder trucks responding to emergency calls. It happened in Edmond, Oklahoma, Portland, Oregon, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The company says it will inspect and replace any fire trucks they found to be defective. There are only 135 fire trucks in the country affected by the recall.
