The Oklahoma 6A high school football powerhouse Lawton Wolverines have a secret weapon this season. That weapon is the team's new placekicker, who is a “she.”
Caitlyn Cox, 17, began spring practices in May as one of the team's “water girls.” However, when long-time coach Randy Breeze realized during spring practices he was extremely thin at the placekicker position, Cox asked the coach if she could kick the football around a little bit.
Cox said she started playing soccer when she was four years old. She's now booming 40-yard field goals to her coach's amazement.
“Yeah, they kind of just looked at me, and I was just like okay I'm just kickin,” she laughed while recounting her "tryout" Wednesday.
Coach Breeze told News 9 the rest of the team has really taken to Caitlyn and supports her 100 percent.
“She's got 94 brothers now,” Breeze said.
Cox's father, Brett, played for Coach Breeze on Lawton's 1987 state championship team.
“Right now, she's the leading women's scorer in the history of Lawton High School," said a beaming Coach Breeze Wednesday afternoon. "For 112 years of football, she's the leading scorer.”
Last week, Cox was five out of five in extra point attempts during Lawton's rout of a team from Salina, Kansas.
