Authorities Identify Deputies Involved In Norman Deadly Shooting

The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of two deputies who were involved in a deadly shooting Saturday in Norman.

According to the Sheriff’s office, at about 8:45 a.m. Deputy Cody Shobe stopped an SUV for a traffic violation near the intersection of 24th Avenue SW and Boyd Street in Norman.

During the traffic stop, Mormann told Deputy Shobe there were a gun and drugs in the vehicle. The K-9 also alerted to the presence of drugs. However, during the investigation, Popplewell ran to Deputy Noel’s patrol car and got inside the vehicle.

Deputy Shobe ran after Popplewell and attempted to get him out of the patrol vehicle. Popplewell managed to put the vehicle in drive and drag Shobe a short distance, according to the Sheriff’s office.

Deputy Noel then opened fire and struck Popplewell. Popplewell was transported by ambulance to Norman Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives have confirmed three outstanding warrants for Popplewell’s arrest. Records show a felony warrant was filed in McClain County for first-degree robbery and aggravated assault and battery. Two warrants were filed in Cleveland County for failure to appear on a pending case and petit larceny, according to the Sheriff’s office.

Mormann was booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center on complaints of possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. He bonded out of jail Saturday afternoon.

Both deputies remain on paid administrative leave, according to the Sheriff's office.
