Did you say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning you were in elementary school?
I want you to think back on what you learned from it.
First we learned what some of those words mean.. pledge... allegiance... we learned the flag deserved our respect.. and that we were one under it.. that the founding fathers believed in a higher power and that the United States is a free and just nation.
Those are critically important principles that every generation needs to understand.
So it's very easy for me to get behind a bill by Senator Rob Standridge of Norman who wants to require every school in Oklahoma to display a United States flag, in at least one grade students must be taught the history and etiquette relating to the flag.
And the Pledge of Allegiance shall be recited every day in elementary schools although no student shall be required to participate.
I know there will be people who will object for all kinds of silly reasons, but how anyone can reason that learning about our flag and what it stands for could in any way be harmful to a child of the United States is beyond me.
I'd go so far as to say that kind of thinking is destructive to our future as a nation.
