Icy Weather Creates Messy Metro Commute

Monday morning's commute was a dangerous one for drivers across the Oklahoma City metro.

Dozens of accidents kept emergency crews busy starting around 2 a.m. Monday and lasting throughout the morning rush hour. Sleet and freezing rain led to vehicle collisions across the metro's Interstate system and on city streets. Oklahoma City's busiest highway junctions proved to be the most dangerous as ice blanked the roads.

From the Fort Smith Junction to just west of the Amarillo Junction, the slipping and sliding caused multiple accidents along a short stretch of the I-40 corridor. Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers worked more than 20 crashes in just the early-morning hours. At one point, three crashed vehicles caused traffic and safety concerns at I-35 and I-40. The driver of one of those vehicles told News 9 that even at 40 mph, he couldn't control his car.

Shortly after 8 a.m., a small band of freezing rain came through Oklahoma City, making travel conditions worse. As the morning progressed and temperatures increased, the roads cleared for the most part.
