Some Oklahoma families won't be going hungry, all thanks to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
It reached a goal to distribute 500 million pounds of food. Organizers say it took 20 years to distribute their first 100 million pounds.
"I never really dreamed of distributing 500 million pounds of food," said Rodney Bivens with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. "It's really an extraordinary accomplishment and it's owed to the community and Oklahoma City and all their volunteers."
Bivens says the goal is to do another 500 million pounds of food in the next 10 years.
Meanwhile, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is in dire need of volunteers to help fill more than 15,000 sacks of food each week for the Food for Kids Backpack Program. Through the Backpack Program, children receive a backpack full of kid-friendly, non-perishable and nutritious food on Friday to sustain them over weekends and school holidays.
