Senior Kat Espinosa pitched nine scoreless innings, and senior Samantha Chrisman's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, gave the Oklahoma State softball team a 1-0 victory over sixth-ranked Texas Friday night at Cowgirl Stadium.
The game was a pitcher's duel from the outset, with Espinosa and UT senior Blair Luna going head-to-head for nine innings. Cowgirl senior Tamara Brown led off the final inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Ari Morrison. With two outs, Chrisman hit the ball into shallow right field, just over the outstretched glove of the Texas second baseman. Brown scored just under the tag of catcher Mandy Ogle, giving OSU the hard-fought 1-0 victory.
Texas had an opportunity to put a run on the board in the top of the ninth. Taylor Hoagland led off the frame with a triple off the wall in right centerfield. However, Brejae Washington popped out on a squeeze-bunt attempt to Espinosa, who then struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
The Cowgirls had two hits with junior Tarah Ettinger collecting the other base hit in the bottom of the fourth. Espinosa (17-15) went nine innings, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out nine. She also did not walk a batter.
The Cowgirls (28-22, 5-8 Big 12) will host the Longhorns (42-7. 12-3) for the second game of the three-game series on Saturday at Cowgirls Stadium. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
