Three St. Gregory's University track athletes will be competing for a national title this week in Geneva, Ohio, at the 2013 NAIA Men's & Women's Indoor Track & Field National Championships. Monika Kalicinska, Dontayveous Allen and Dominic Cabada all qualified for the event based on their meet times this season.
Both Kalicinska and Cabada will be competing in their second national championship meet of the academic year. They qualified for NAIA nationals in cross country in November.
Kalicinska, a senior from Poland, earned her indoor spot in the 5,000-meter run. She turned in a season-best time of 18:26.01 in the event at the Nebraska Tune-Up on Feb. 16, meeting a "B" qualifying standard. Kalicinska will begin her trek toward a national title at 3:45 p.m. (CST) Thursday when the semifinals for the 5K begin.
Allen, a freshman from Longview, Texas, also met a "B" standard at the Nebraska Tune-Up, finishing the 600-meter run in a season-best time of 1:21.93. Allen's time was good enough for third place overall at the meet. The semifinals for the 600 begin at 2:40 p.m. Friday.
Cabada, a freshman from Boulder, Colo., earned SGU's first qualifying standard of the season Feb. 2 at the MSSU Lion Invitational in Joplin, Mo. His time of 8:46.45 in the 3,000-meter run narrowly earned him a "B" standard, coming in a quarter of a second ahead of the qualifying mark.
Cabada will compete in the semifinals of the 3K at 4:45 p.m. Friday.
If they advance, the finals for each of their events are scheduled for Saturday. The 600 begins at 12:10 p.m., the 3K at 1:20 p.m. and the 5K at 2:10 p.m.
