The Oklahoma State Cowboys notched another win in the first game of a mid-week two-game tangle with Ohio State.
The Cowboys took an early 2-0 lead that disappeared in the seventh as the Buckeyes tried for a comeback. But OSU's Saulyer Saxon continued his stellar game with a triple in the bottom of the eighth to help Oklahoma State to the 6-4 win, its 29th of the season.
OSU starter Randy McCurry was strong for the Cowboys throughout much of the game.
McCurry sat the Buckeyes down in order to start the third then OSU's Gage Green opened the bottom of the frame with a single to right. Two batters later, Hunter Bailey garnered a walk before Robbie Rea singled to third to load the bases. Jared Womack's single plated Green to put the Cowboys on the board 1-0.
Later in the fifth, Green started things off again but this time he was hit by a pitch. He stole second and advanced to third off Saulyer Saxon's single. Bailed reached on a fielders choice that scored Green to make it 2-0.
Ohio State found momentum in the seventh. Brad Hallberg started it off with a double to right. A single and a walk loaded the bases for the Buckeyes. Kirby Pellant then flied out to center scoring Hallberg making it 2-1. The Buckeyes tied the game off a single by Aaron Gretz to the right side scoring Patrick Porter.
The Cowboys made it interesting in the bottom of the eighth. Randy McCurry started things off with a single and one out and one walk later, the Cowboys had two on. Saxon stepped to the plate and blasted a ball to center for a triple scoring both McCurry and Aaron Cornell giving Oklahoma State a 6-4 advantage they would carry through the remainder of the game.
Oklahoma State has now won 11 of its last 12 games moving to 29-18 on the season. The Cowboys were paced by Saxon's two hits and two RBI.
McCurry went 6.1 innings for the Cowboys allowing six hits and two runs while striking out six. Chase Stevens dealt 2.2 innings of relief with striking out two while allowing four hits.
Ohio State is now 27-21 on the year, they were led by Kirby Pellant who was 1-of-2 with one RBI.
The two teams will face each other again Wednesday at 6:30 in Stillwater.
