SAYRE, Oklahoma -- Prison officials have contained a prison riot at North Fork Correctional Facility in Sayre Tuesday afternoon.
According to a news release from the prison, prison officers and staff responded to multiple inmate fights in various areas of the facility just before noon Tuesday.
Officers were able to contain the incident within the secure perimeter of the facility. According to officials, there have been no escapes, no hostage situations and no fatalities.
Facility management and staff have been going through every area of the facility to secure the inmates in those areas, and to identify inmates requiring medical treatment for injuries, according to the news release.
No injuries to staff have been reported at this point. However, multiple inmates were treated on-site by the facility's medical staff for various injuries.
Beckham County Sheriff Scott Jay said at least a dozen inmates were taken to area hospitals. He said the prison is safe, and investigators will look into the cause and whether it was gang-related or racially motivated.
According to the news release, the prison is placed on complete lockdown Tuesday night. All inmates are confined to their cells, and their movements are restricted until further notice.
Family members were able to go to the Beckham County Activity Center to check on family members on-staff at the Facility.
"I haven't heard anything of what happened, I just heard there was a riot. I don't know what started it," family member Sherry said.
According to its website, North Fork Correctional Facility is a privately owned, medium security prison that houses 2,381 inmates from California. Sheriff Jay said some of these inmates may have made weapons.
Sayre is located about 130 miles west of Oklahoma City near the Texas border.
