COMANCHE COUNTY, Oklahoma – Cooler weather over the weekend has helped slow down the 32,500 acres of wildfire burning in northwestern Comanche County Sunday morning.
According to Comanche County Public Information Office, the Meers Fire Evacuation Order was being lifted at 10 a.m. Sunday. All residents are allowed to return.
Officials say fire crews are minimizing staff to monitor the grassfire right now. A cold front which moved into the area around 12 a.m. brought a minimal amount of precipitation and higher humidity levels to help calm the fire. Fire personnel set controlled fire lines in order to allow the winds to push the fire into already burned areas.
Fire and law personnel from across the State and northern Texas responded to the massive wildfire which began Thursday afternoon near Oklahoma 49 on the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Refuge officials have not released a cause of fire.
According to the Public Information Office, a total of 11 homes were destroyed in the fire. An unknown number of outbuildings, barns and storage buildings have been destroyed as well. However, crews were able to preserve most structures in Camp Y'Shua, including the several homes in that area.
Officials say one law enforcement personnel was transported to the hospital Friday evening due to smoke inhalation. One firefighter was transported to the hospital Saturday night after falling from a truck and receiving a concussion. Several minor injuries were reported, those being treated and released.
