PAYNE COUNTY, Oklahoma -- A Cushing man was run over by the van he was trying to push downhill early Saturday morning just southeast of Ripley City in Payne County. Troopers say 52-year-old Bernard Everett Hawkwing was taken to Cushing Regional Hospital in stable condition with arm, leg and internal injuries.
Hawkwing was pushing his 1999 Ford Econoline van downhill on the eastbound shoulder of State Highway 33 at 6:43 a.m. when the vehicle started gaining speed. Hawkwing tried to jump into the vehicle as it entered the roadway, according to a report by Trooper Coleman Parker of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Hawkwing was caught under the vehicle and run over by the left rear tires. The van continued across the roadway and went through a fence on the westbound side of the highway.
His condition at the time of the accident was apparently normal, and the cause of the collision is listed as pedestrian action.
