Sooner football fans were taken on an emotional roller coaster on Saturday. It started with panic when GatorCountry.com claimed multiple sources had confirmed to them that Bob Stoops was the next head coach in Gainesville. And it ended with the best case scenario for OU...Stoops stays, and their arch-rival loses its favorite son.
Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp is the new head coach of the Gators. The Horns now need two coordinators (Mack Brown fired OC Greg Davis earlier in the week). OU may have kept their coach and won next years Red River Rivalry in one fail swoop.
As it turns out, Florida did indeed hire "a" Bob Stoops....just not "the" Bob Stoops. They followed OUs game plan from a dozen years ago. They hired a fiery defensive coordinator from one of the top programs in America. Rarely do the big boys hire assistants. They dont have to. They hired proven head coaches. But it worked for the Sooners in 1999. And the Gators hope to follow the same path back to glory.
I dont know if Muschamp will succeed in Gainesville. His Horns only went 5-7 last year, but you certainly cant blame it all on his defense. But I do know this. This hurts Texas. Mack Browns staff meetings are suddenly very roomy. Hes coming off a disasterous season, and is now facing coaching upheaval on both sides of the ball. Its a dark night in Austin. But the stars seem to be shining much brighter tonight in Norman.
