CEMENT, Oklahoma -- Four people, including three members of the same family, were killed Thursday in an accident the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said could have been prevented.
The wreck closed Highway 277 in Caddo County near the town of Cement for more than four hours.
Troopers said driver Andrew Benson tried to pass a semi in a no-passing zone. His 2005 Dodge slammed head-on into a 2001 Pontiac, carrying a family from Cyril, Oklahoma.
Benson and one of his passengers survived, but a second passenger, 37-year-old Vicky Lynn Meredith, was killed.
Three people in the second car died, all of them from the same family. Jimmie Don Mayall, 39, Krissy Lynn Mayall, 29, and Anna Mayall, 16, were all pronounced dead at the scene. A toddler, 3-year-old Chance Mayall, survived the crash and was flown by helicopter to OU Children's Hospital where he's listed in serious condition.
A trust fun has been set up for the Mayall family at the First National Bank of Chickasha, P.O. Box 1130 Chickasha, OK 73023. Jimmie Don Mayall was a police officer for the Apache Police.
