OKLAHOMA CITY – A doctor from Edmond has undergone a successful double hand transplant in Louisville, Kentucky.
Surgeons operated on Dr. Rich Edwards for more than 17 hours beginning Aug. 24 and ending the next day.
Dr. Edwards was a chiropractor who'd practiced for 24 years. He sustained second and third degree burns on his body after he was trapped in his vehicle during a wild grass fire.
Dr. Edwards spent several months in a burn center. The fire disfigured his hands and surgeons were forced to remove a major portion of seven fingers.
Dr. Edwards agreed to have both his hands amputated in order to undergo the transplant.
