CHANDLER, Oklahoma -- The former police chief of Chandler will not spend time behind bars for a misdemeanor charge of failing to report an accident with an injury.

Kevin Towler entered a no contest plea before Lincoln County Judge Shelia Kirk Wednesday afternoon, just one day following his resignation from the Chandler police force.

"He felt by entering the plea, he could put this situation behind him and focus on his family and wife," said Towler's attorney Irven Box.

Towler's wife, Rowena, suffered several broken bones and internal injuries in the April accident, but investigators say Towler failed to call 911 and report the accident to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The punishment for the charge is a fine of $5 to $500 or imprisonment for up to 10 days, but Judge Kirk handed down a six month deferred sentence to Towler along with a $100 fine.
