Sand Springs Loses Starting Quarterback

SAND SPRINGS, Oklahoma -- Sand Springs quarterback Johnny Deaton broke his collarbone on the second play of the third quarter against Enid, presumably costing him his senior season.

"We had a first down, he was just going down to avoid a tackle and fell on his right shoulder. You could just tell," said Sandite head coach Dustin Kinard.

Deaton, considered by many the top quarterback in the state, committed to Oklahoma State in February, but Friday night's injury shouldn't change his plans to graduate early to enroll at OSU.

"He'll be there in January competing for the starting spot. That's the kind of kid he is," said coach Kinard. "He's just had a run of bad luck."

Stepping in for Sand Springs is untested sophomore Derrick Harger, who will get his first full game of action next week at Stillwater High School.
