OKLAHOMA CITY – You usually only get to see them during a bomb scare, or during a hostage negotiation.
Crime Tracker Adrianna Iwasinski took a behind the scenes look at the men and women behind the Oklahoma City Police Department's Bomb Squad and Tactical Team.
It's a rare chance to see the Oklahoma City Police Department's Tactical Unit and Bomb Squad in action. But the bullets flying during this scenario are part of a training.
On Monday, we got to tag along with the Leadership Class of Oklahoma City as they got to see our tax dollars at work.
The police department showed them just how important each and every piece of equipment they use is to public safety.
"You know we think of them as being the people that just give tickets and its not that way at all," said Kevin Wittrock who witnessed the training drill.
"It makes me want to say listen, we ought to speak up a little more for our law enforcement, our police department and the financing of that," said George Young, Leadership Commission Co-chair.
They got to witness the bomb squad detonate a bomb and show the destructive power of just a pound or two of explosives.
They also got to witness snipers taking out a target from more than a hundred feet away.
"We enjoy bringing them out here letting them see the equipment, see what our capabilities are and see who's protecting them and how we're protecting them," said Lt. Mike Jackson with the bomb squad.
"It's ultimately for the citizen," said Blake Webster with the Tactical Team. "It's for their safety and when we go out that is ultimately our goal is to make sure everyone, including the suspect or the bad guy is taken into custody safely, and that's what we're looking for."
