STILLWATER, Oklahoma – OSU fans must have had trouble believing their eyes.
As their powerful offense sputtered partway through the game, the Cowboy defense took over and made crucial stops in a 37-14 victory Thursday in Stillwater.
For years, Oklahoma State's offense simply tried to outscore opponents to make up for defensive downfalls.
But the roles were reversed as OSU's defense forced a fumble and picked up two turnovers on downs on key possessions.
The Cowboys' offense was spectacular outside of a rough stretch in the second half.
Brandon Weeden was 17-of-18 passing in the first quarter, helping OSU to a 14-0 lead after one.
Joseph Randle rushed in for the first score of the night, and Brandon Weeden followed shortly after with a beautifully-thrown fade to Justin Blackmon.
Randle picked up another score in the second and Weeden finished the half 28-of-32 to help secure a 21-0 lead at the break.
The defense, meanwhile, did more than its fair share of the work, holding Arizona scoreless and allowing just six rushing yards in the first half.
Following OSU's third score, however, its offense stalled, going five straight possessions without a score.
But the defense held steady, stopping Arizona on six of seven possessions in a similar span.
Weeden connected with Blackmon on four straight plays, ending with a touchdown to finish out the third quarter and make the score 27-7 after three.
From there, Jeremy Smith and the Cowboys began to grind some clock, picking up two more scores in the process while the defense gave up a long touchdown.
Weeden connected on 42 passes in the game, a school record.
Randle could very well have been the MVP for the Cowboys, racking up 121 rushing yards and two scores to go with 99 receiving yards.
Justin Blackmon led Oklahoma State in receiving with 128 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
OSU (2-0) now has a couple of extra days off before hitting the road for Tulsa on Sept. 17 at 9 p.m.
