STILLWATER, Oklahoma – The Oklahoma State University men's basketball team retired its first number Wednesday night as part of a special halftime ceremony to remember the 10 members of the OSU family who died in a plane crash ten years ago.
The Number 10 will now hang in the rafters in honor of the men lost. The ceremony was held one day shy of the 10th anniversary of the tragic event as OSU hosted the Texas Longhorns.
Former coach Eddie Sutton and former players Andre Williams, Desmond Mason and Doug Gottlieb were part the halftime ceremony. OSU also invited back former student-athletes, athletic staff, coaches and student workers who were part of the 2000-2001 team or whose years in Stillwater overlapped that team.
Fans received a unique commemorative T-shirt honoring those lost.
Oklahoma State also planned a private gathering for family members of the 10 men prior to the game.
Despite the emotions that came along with the night, the Oklahoma State Cowboys were unable to keep up with Number 8 Texas in the game, falling 61-46 to the Longhorns Wednesday.
