MOORE, Oklahoma – It was a heartbreaking weekend for a Moore family, whose 9-year-old daughter was hit and killed by a motorist just hours after her grandfather came to the aid of a police officer in a separate car accident.
"I can't eat. I can't sleep. I can't do nothing but cry," said April Henderson, Shayla's mother.
Henderson said her only daughter, 9-year-old Shayla, was killed while attempting to cross a Bethany road. She said her daughter, who was walking back home from a birthday party, was the one thing worth living for.
"Now I can't see my baby…I went to her room last night and I could see my baby's stuff and it hurt so bad. It hurt me to look at her picture," Henderson said.
For Pastor Kevin Henderson, Shayla's grandfather, it's been an emotional roller coaster. Just hours before learning Shayla lost her life, he was providing aid to save an Oklahoma City police officer after watching him get hit by a truck.
"It plays back in my mind that after the accident and today I can just see him flying through the air like a rag doll," said Pastor Henderson.
He said he's happy the officer is OK, and for the time they had with Shayla.
"It was a wild day yesterday but there was a life saved and we witnessed that life saved. That officer's life was saved and we'll forever thank God for that and thank God for this little special gift he has given to us for 10 years," Pastor Henderson said.
The family said to make things worse, they have little financial help to bury their daughter. They have set up a fund at Harvest Bank under Shayla Henderson's name.
